Collaboration for trANslational Artificial Intelligence tRIals
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are moving into healthcare at a steady pace in the hopes that they will augment care, administrative tasks, and support clinicians in their daily workflows.
The field has progressed immensely in terms of identifying what makes a ‘good’ AI tool from a technical standpoint. We have also seen the introduction of reporting guidelines for clinical trials involving AI tools. These are contributing to better evidence to help us integrate AI tools with more precision, focusing on benefits to patients and healthcare systems.
But a chasm remains - we know there is a big gap between building a good model in silico and a model’s performance in its live setting. We know that many, if not most, models fail when they hit the ground. So how do we make sure that we have a higher chance of a successful integration? How do we streamline this translation from bench to bedside? How do we take a ‘whole system’ perspective on translation and turn it into a plan for evaluation?
These are the questions that Project CANAIRI will answer.
We think the phase between validating a model and integrating a model into health systems is critical for efficient translation. This phase is called the ‘silent phase’ or ‘silent evaluation’ (among many other names). Project CANAIRI is interested in what we need to be doing during this phase to improve how we translate AI tools from the perspectives of a diversity of stakeholders.
If you have experiences in conducting these local, silent evaluations, we’d be happy for you to reach out to us and let us know what your experiences have been. If you don’t have experience but are interested in working with us, please reach out! Whether you are a researcher, student, or consumer, we want to receive feedback.
Funding and Support
Project CANAIRI recognizes the impact that generative AI has had on professionals working in the creative arts. To create our logo and artwork, we chose to engage Orche Dawn, a 100% Aboriginal owned and managed company that compensates their artists fairly.
We are grateful to artist Jordan Lovegrove (Ngarrindjeri) and the team at Ochre Dawn for creating CANAIRI's artwork
